More informally, I think this is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants the challenge of building a genuinely new institution on a campus. UB has a number of units that provide various kinds of writing support. It's actually been interesting uncovering the different kinds of writing support that go on in different schools and programs. However I think that the administration has begun to realize that a more concerted effort to support undergraduate writing will support students in terms of retention and time to degree (two metrics universites care about a great deal). UB also has a large number of professional and graduate students and recognizes the need to support those students, particularly in terms of dissertations. Many of these students are international, which is part of the reason why global literacies/Englishes appears in the job description. We need to figure out a way to better support these students.

There will be an associate director, who will be a full-time staff person (that person is being hired right now). We envision the associate director as taking on a significant part of the responsiblities for the day-to-day operation of the Center. As such, we are really looking for someone who can provide scholarly and intellectual leadership for the Center.

I know some people will see "Buffalo" and be reluctant to apply. We have really enjoyed living in the Buffalo area. We live in the suburbs near the campus where the public school system is excellent and housing is affordable. Many of my colleagues live in the city, and I think the city is really a vibrant place. Obviously it's not like a major city but neither is the mortgage. There are a lot of great outdoor things to do in Western NY. Of course you've heard about our winters. Personally I don't find them that bad. On the flipside the summers and falls are beautiful.

Feel free to contact me or Arabella if you have questions.
